Ecstasy Drug Abuse

About Ecstasy and Other Club Drugs

Ecstasy is a hallucinogenic drug that is part of a family of drugs called "club drugs" because of their popularity at all-night dance parties, dance clubs and bars.  The drug ecstasy, also known as MDMA, is an illegal drug that is both a stimulant and a psychedelic.  Other club drugs include:

  • LSD (acid)
  • Rohypnol
  • GHB
  • Crystal meth
  • Special K

While simply using stimulants and hallucinogens recreationally is dangerous enough, an addiction can have serious consequences.  These club drugs are more psychologically addictive than physically addictive, however using too much of the drug at any time can have negative short and long-term consequences:

  • Insomnia
  • Paranoia
  • Mood swings
  • Depression
  • Dehydration
  • Nausea
  • Confusion
  • Emotional problems
  • Memory impairment

People can also overdose on ecstasy and other club drugs which can result in an increased body temperature, electrolyte imbalance, organ failure, cardiac arrest and even death.

Testimonials

I can't believe I am even writing this letter but my sponsor urged me to. I need to tell you that if it wasn't for the Freedom Rings program I never would have stayed in treatment. The staff and other patients provided me with unconditional love which made it easier for me to come out and my parents to accept my sexuality. Special thanks to Christie.
Bradley H., 15 months clean and sober, Towson, Md.

Well I went into treatment kicking and screaming. I didn't want to be there but behind all this acting out, I was just plain scared. I just couldn't imagine a life without drugs or alcohol. Today I can't imagine going back to it.
Juan Q., Miami, Fl.

I'm not sure I can get across how grateful I am to Priscilla, my therapist. She helped me deal with a past that stole everything from me. Today my relationship with my family is great and I am accomplishing things I never thought possible. Never give up on yourself.
